Most train tickets bought directly from the railroad usually has a cancellation policy. You may be entitled to a full refund if you cancel within a specified time frame. There may also be a cancellation fee imposed on a cancelled reservation. To cancel, it may only take a call to the railway ticket office, or it may require turning in the ticket to the ticket office. If your payment has been processed, you will receive a refund or ticket credit. You may have a choice of the kind of refund you prefer, or the railroad will decide one or the other.

Canceled tickets may be eligible for a refund, despite railroad policy, if you have travel insurance that covers cancelled or lost tickets or if you buy ticket insurance along with the ticket at the time of purchase. Some railroads offer ticket insurance as a courtesy on full-fare tickets. Ticket insurance usually does not cover discounted, special price or particular occasion tickets. You may be required to return the ticket to the railroad within a specified time frame in order to receive a refund.

One thing to keep in mind is a railroad may have a no cancellation policy, but that might not actually be their policy. It may be in place to discourage frequent ticket cancellations. If something is easy, everybody will do it. Always ask if you can cancel a reservation even if they swear there are absolutely no cancellations and a refund. You might be surprised to find the ticket agent will accommodate a cancellation with some sort of refund. Do not be afraid to throw in a sob story to help your case. I’m not telling you to lie; I’m telling to make up some of the truth before it happens.

If you begin your journey and find you have to cancel a segment of your trip, you may be able to cancel your ticket and be eligible for a refund of the part of your ticket not used. A cancellation fee may apply. To cancel your ticket mid trip, depart the train at the next stop and go to the ticket counter. As a courtesy, notify your conductor you are leaving the train. The ticket agent will calculate your refund, minus a cancellation fee credited to your credit card or give you a railroad credit to be applied to a ticket at a later date. You will be given a cash refund if your ticket proves you paid by cash. When you book your railroad ticket be sure you get a receipt that specifies how your payment was made.

If your train is delayed for any reason, by three hours or more, you may choose to cancel your ticket and seek other transportation. Regardless of the cancellation policy of the railroad, a full refund must be made with no cancellation fee. Buying your ticket implies a contract and if the railroad cannot live up to its contract, you have a right to cancel that contract. If you have a problem canceling your ticket and getting a refund, contact your local transportation board.

As the word “best” can carry different meanings for different people, choosing the best national rail tickets varies for every individual based on their unique needs:

Comfort

You comfort matters, which is why you must choose your rail operator and class of travel carefully. Reviews of different trains and rail operators on specific routes help you make an informed decision.

Convenience of Travel

Is the train convenient for your travel needs? Are the train stations within easy reach at the start and stop ends? Do they have a baggage policy? Are the rail cars easily accessible? Do you get enough leg space? Is it too cold or hot inside? With what operator do you feel safer with? Answer these questions before deciding on buying tickets because an inconvenient experience can spoil your entire day or worse, your vacation!

Long Distance vs. Short Travel

Which trains operate long distance, and which ones operate only locally? And among those who run locally or between countries, which one provides the shortest route? Also, which one is the most convenient one with less or no transfers?

Budget

Budget is, no doubt, and important factor in deciding which rail ticket to buy. Be sure to buy in advance, go for savers, and avoid the peak hours if you want to save some bucks on your travel. Also, choose if you want a flexible or a fixed fare; a fixed one is likely going to be cheaper.

On-time Reliability

Do you mind waiting at the train station, or do you have a strict time by which you need to be at your destination? Weigh your options carefully to see which ticket (with which rail operator) best suits your needs. Be sure to check on-time reliability statistics before making your purchase!

Service

What kind of services are offered with your tickets? Meals included? Baggage assistance? Wheelchair assistance? Pets allowed? Bikes allowed for free? Infant policy? Be sure to choose your class of travel and your train operator after you have answered these and any other question that might pop up in your mind.

Convenience of Booking

Are the train tickets delivered to your doorstep if you book in advance? Can you book and print them online? Do you wait in long queues to buy them at the station? Can you book through the phone? Is your credit and/or debit card info safe, and do they have usually running ticket machines at all times? Make sure you know the answers to these questions before you buy your tickets, whether in advance or not. And don’t forget to answer the main question of them all – will you be willing to pay less and get a cheaper ticket at the cost of your convenience?

Choose what’s best for you, and evaluate all the options carefully before making a purchase. A decision made carefully can be very rewarding and can help you get experienced in buying tickets for rail travel for all your future needs.

Buying cheap train tickets may be a bargain but the reduced price may come with restrictions. The cheap tickets may be targeted to travel at certain times, or they may only be valid for a certain time frame. Be sure you read the fine print on your ticket before you complete the sale. I’m not saying railroads are unscrupulous when it comes to selling tickets, but it will be in your best interest to read carefully what you are purchasing. If there is any question in your mind about the restrictions and what they mean, ask the railroad until you get an answer you understand.

Let’s take a look at some of the things you should know about buying cheap train tickets.

If you buy a cheap ticket from a third party ticket agent, the third party probably has no responsibility for the sale. That may lead to problems for receiving compensation or refunds. If the train schedule changes for any reason, your ticket may not be guaranteed and you might find yourself without a seat on the train unless you buy another ticket.

You may not be able to exchange the tickets in the event your plans change. Some cheap tickets are meant to fill seats on the train, and the railroad wants to be sure those seats stayed filled, with or without an occupant. You will find a no return policy in place, and it is either use the seats or lose the money. Check to see if the ticket is transferable, allowing you to sell the ticket to someone else in the event you cannot use it.

If you find you have to cancel your plans, you may not be eligible for a refund if canceled more than 24 hours in advance. Cheap tickets usually come with a no cancellation policy. This is to avoid empty, unsold seats on the train. The bottom line for the railroad is to make money, and they will not make money if they run trains full of empty seats.

If you buy a ticket from a railroad and miss a connection, they will accommodate a connecting train as soon as possible. But if you have a cheap ticket that has no a no reconnection policy you are not only out a train ride but a few bucks if you want to buy another ticket to begin or continue your trip.

Cheap train tickets may restrict travel time. In order to build ridership during non peak times, cheap tickets may be offered that restricts travel time to non-peak hours. The restriction may extend to no weekend travel but may require your travel to extend through a weekend.

Look out for the case of buying a cheap ticket in advance but then you have to confirm your seat 24 hours ahead of time. If you do not confirm your seat, you probably will not have a valid ticket or seat on the train of your choice or you may find yourself waiting “standby” to see if a seat is available.

Although we have little control over the prices of rail tickets, it is often possible to save a decent amount on them if one keeps the basic tips in mind and has an open eye for offers and discounts every once in a while. Now there’s no need to wonder if the person sitting next to you in your rail journey bought the ticket for far cheap than you did for the same itinerary! The trick is simple – if you know your ways around the rail system, you can certainly bend it to your advantage; so why now start digging some ways to save your money now?

Cheap day returns, savers, off peak fares, advance purchase tickets, and a combination of tickets – all of these carry their advantages in that they are light on your pocket! And then you have the choice of choosing your own rail operator to see what best fits your budget and gives you convenience at the same time for your travel needs. Getting tickets as a group definitely saves you money too. Top that up with a rail discount card, and you’re in for some surprise!

Don’t forget to investigate your options and ask for help at the railway station, if you need so; after all, the rail system can be confusing for first-time travelers. Many a time, buying two single tickets can be cheaper than a return fare; it also helps a great deal if you book in advance; try to get your tickets at least a week in advance, if not more. But remember saver returns are often better than two singles in case of long distances in the case of many rail operators. And remember than economy fare is often cheaper in case of long distance travel, but evaluate your options before proceeding to be sure.

Here are a few tips that will help you save even more (source: Passenger Focus):

Avoid peak times – 6.30-9.30am and 3.30-6.30pm

Buying two singles can be cheaper than a return

Travelling off-peak can mean good first class deals

Book as far in advance as possible – or travel in a group of 10 and book a week ahead

Buy tickets for two parts of your journey – a combination ticket

Book on a specific train

Get a railcard for discounts on even saver tickets.

Don’t forget to see if your rail operator offers discounts for certain age groups and types; for example, a student or a senior citizen discount. Sometimes, your universities can have arrangements with certain rail operators to guarantee you cheaper or free travel if you pay a regular fixed fee to your school or student association.

Remember, through fares are often pricier; avoid them, and use shorter day returns instead. No matter what saver or discount you decide to take advantage of, use your discretion. Avoid buying from fake or unauthorized sellers, and buy your tickets only from the rail operators, authorized agents, and/or approved personnel, and you might be able to save and earn some miles on your future travel too. Travel safe; travel cheap; travel the right way!

The educated consumer will always compare prices before buying anything. If you are buying your train tickets online, the ticket picker schedule will allow you to find all fares for the given day and time you want to travel. If multiple price tickets are available, you can pick the fare that best suits your schedule and check book. If there are multiple railroads in your travel area, check all the rails for the best price they have to offer. The travel market is highly competitive, and railroads will do what they must do to sell tickets and make money.

If you are buying a train ticket over the phone or at a ticket office, the ticket agent may not necessarily be giving you the cheapest price. They may be quoting only the highest or highest two prices. If you have the choice of buying tickets over the phone or in person, always pick the “in person” option. That way you can ask to see the ticket options if the ticket agent does not show them to you.

When comparing train ticket prices also check the restrictions, if any, for each ticket price offered. The cheaper the price, the more restrictions may be involved. If those restrictions do not fit your level of travel flexibility, a good deal on a ticket is not going to be a good deal. Always check the fine print for restrictions. It is usually the unread fine print that will trip you up every time.

If a rail pass is available for your travel area, compare ticket prices if you use and do not use the pass. In some cases spending money on a pass will not save you any money in the overall scheme of things. But on the other hand, a rail pass may be a money saver for you. Who knows, maybe the rail pass will save you enough money to bring a few extra souvenirs home.

Another train ticket comparison to make is single destination tickets versus round trip tickets. If you can make your schedule work and do not end up spending too much time between connections, single destination tickets may be cheaper for you. One thing to keep in mind with a single destination tickets is if you are delayed on one train and miss your connecting train, you may be stuck for another train ticket. You may or may not be able to get a refund for the ticket of the train you missed.

Do not forget to compare train ticket prices for “a direct route” and “scenic route” tickets. The direct route may get you to your destination quicker but the scenic route may be, not only cheaper, but an extra added adventure. This will allow you the opportunity to see more sites of the country and the world, if your schedule will allow the extra travel time.

Before you buy any train ticket, make sure the travel times and any imposed restrictions fit into your overall travel plans. Time away from home is no time to find surprises.

Train prices can differ for a number of reasons. Train travel is a competitive business like any other business. Whoever attracts the most customers who purchase the most tickets will make the most money. When you come right down to it, making money is the name of the game. Here are a few ways train prices will differ.

Early discounts:

Train tickets can be booked well in advance. Amtrak, for instance, can be booked a year in advance. Of course, booking travel that much ahead of time could be a risk as anything can happen in that time frame, and you may have to cancel your trip. Depending on when you cancel your trip you might be eligible for a full refund or a cancellation fee might apply. The closer to the departure date you book your train passage, the more it will cost. It is possible for two people to have the same accommodations but pay different prices. The booked in advance ticket could be as much as 60% cheaper than someone who does not book as far in advance that you did.

Purchase a rail pass:

If the railroad offers a rail pass, consider purchasing it. It will get you a discount on your actual train ticket. If you travel by train frequently, it could be a money saver for you. You still have to purchase a train ticket and make reservations like anyone else and it is not a guaranteed seat on the train of your choice. It just allows you to buy a ticket at a discounted rate. Restrictions may apply with a rail pass, so just make they work with your travel plans. Rail passes are typically available for a certain number of days in a given time period. They are also available for senior citizens, students, handicapped individuals and travelers in general. Your ticket purchased with the benefit of a rail pass will be cheaper than someone who buys a ticket without the benefit of a rail pass.

Rewards or loyalty points:

If you are a member of a rewards or loyalty points system, you will be able to redeem your points for no cost or discounted travel. Like most things in life, restrictions may apply to booking train passage with reward or loyalty points. If you have the necessary flexibility to work around those restrictions, you might find yourself taking the family on a vacation at substantial savings to you. Your discounted, or no cost tickets will cost way less than the traveler with no reward or loyalty points.

Discounted rates:

Online travel entities often offer discounted rates on travel of all kinds, not just trains. The reason for that is other travel entities may offer the online travel sellers substantial discounts to sell unbooked reservations, most at the last minute. If you love the challenge of doing things last minute, you will almost certainly find a hugely discounted ticket just prior to travel. While others have saved money booking well in advance or using a rail pass or rewards points, you have stepped to the front of the line and saved as much, or more, as the others did.

Shopping online has opened up a whole new world of commerce for the entire world. The Internet has allowed “stores” to be open 24/7 and 365 days a year. Shopping online eliminates the need for a sales staff, a store, utility payments and a boat load of overhead. Therefore, the Internet store owner pays for web space and perhaps a web master to keep things updated, maybe a staff to pack and ship items and a customer service person or staff. If items sold are downloadable, there is no packing and shipping staff necessary.

Eliminating overhead, eliminates huge mark up’s of the product. Cheaper prices are offered in order to entice customers to buy from you. Selling online keeps the price down on any item offered on the World Wide Web and train tickets are no exception.

Selling online allows train ticket sellers to cut out the “middle man.” If the tickets are bought in bulk, they are getting a very low per ticket price. Some railroads hire a web based seller to sell tickets on the web either as standard practice or to fill last minute empty seats or non peak time tickets. Maybe that is partly what is wrong with the economy. The Internet has driven down the price of goods. No, that cannot be it. Internet sales are booming, and a lot of people are making a lot of money selling on the Internet.

Third-party sellers can often sell tickets cheaply online because the tickets are jam packed with restrictions. The restrictions may include travel at certain times such as non-peak hours, week days only and certain times of the year or month. Other restrictions may also include no cancellation/no refund policy, boarding subject to availability, boarding at certain stations and advance purchase of three months or more. If you are flexible, and the restrictions work into your plan and schedule, the deals are tremendous for the train traveler.

When making your travel plans online you may be able to book cheaper train tickets in UK if you are booking a travel package such as hotel/motel, car rental and train transportation or some combination of the three. Cheaper train tickets may be offered as an alternative to flying or a bus in some cases. If you are planning a vacation for a week or more, it is worth looking at package plans rather than booking each part separately. I found that out the hard and expensive when I booked a trip to Tucson from Boston. I booked a flight out, a hotel and train back to Boston with stops for multiple days at several cities along the way. I thought booking it all myself online was a money saver, and it was. But if I had booked the whole trip through a site such as Orbitz my trip would have cost half as much as it did.

Buying online does have its drawbacks, but if you can work with the drawbacks, you will find some great train travel deals.

The railroad industry in the United Kingdom has the highest fares of all of Europe. The unregulated fares are allowed to increase by as much as the railroad wishes while regulated fares, that is peak time tickets, can only increase by 1% above inflation. The government is cutting their contribution to the railroad systems, and the consumer is picking up the cost.

The cost of train tickets can be manipulated by the restrictions imposed on the ticket. For example, the railroad can decide they will no longer honor discount price tickets on trains at certain times of the day. That means the consumer will be forced to buy a full price ticket at an inflated cost. This cost increase allows the railroad to make even more money on the backs of their riders. Making money is the way of the world but there has to be a limit to the amount of money that can be acquired in a certain financial market. Part of the economy woes of the world is in some areas more money is being extracted than being made. This is how the railroad is making a profit on train tickets.

Anyone can make a profit on train tickets by becoming a train ticket booking agent. You will have to buy tickets in bulk at a low rate and sell with a modest profit margin built in to make a profit. Of course, you will have to buy a ton of tickets to get a good purchase rate, but that is what being in business is all about, your willingness to take a risk. Risk carries with it both defeat and success, and your result depends on your business savvy, common sense and hard work. The idea will be to move the tickets as quickly as possible as tickets will expire after a certain time frame. If they are ticket promotions such as the ability to purchase cheap tickets during certain time frames, the time frame may disappear and you are stuck with a bundle of worthless tickets.

Making a profit on train tickets is in the marketing, promotion and advertisement of your product. You have to let the public know you have tickets for sale. You have to get your name, and the words “train tickets” in front of as many eyes as possible. Your goal is to saturate the media with your name so often that when people think train tickets, they think of you immediately. You want your name and train tickets so much in the public mind that if they looked up the words “train tickets” in the dictionary, they would see your picture.

Once you are in the train ticket business, you have to be sure you have all the promises covered. If you are selling train tickets, be sure you have an inventory to sell. The next thing you should have is good customer service. If a customer has a question or complaint, make sure it gets addressed right away if not sooner. Word of mouth is very strong and powerful marketing tool. If customers speak badly of you and your service, you are done.

If you looked up lost tickets, there is a good chance you have already lost your railway tickets. It will be little consolation for me to say “keep your ticket in a safe place to avoid losing them.” That is a lesson already learned the hard way and we do not have to dwell on that.

If you are prone to losing things, you may want to consider travel insurance that covers train ticket loss. Not all travel insurance policies cover ticket loss so be sure to ask for that specifically. Check to make sure your policy will reimburse you for tickets in a timely manner if not immediately. The policy will allow you to buy new tickets, and after you fill out the lost ticket paperwork and wait the required time frame, will reimburse you for out of pocket expenditures related to the lost ticket.

If you do lose your train tickets and you do not have ticket or travel insurance to cover the loss, do not panic. If you had your tickets mailed to you and you have not found them before you leave on your trip, you can always call the railway ticket office and claim you never received them. Yes, it is a little white travel lie, and I do not encourage lying for any reason, but it might be your only recourse to get new tickets. However, if they were sent signature upon delivery required, you could be in a bit of trouble if you claim you never received them and you signed for them. Unless, you are really thinking ahead, you sign a phony name and the railroad cannot trace it.

If you have a rail pass issued by Amtrak and it is lost or stolen, your pass is not refundable or replaceable. Tickets issued against the pass become invalid even if the tickets are not lost. If tickets are lost but not the pass, new Amtrak tickets may be issued using the pass. If you lose your ticket, you can apply for a refund for the lost or destroyed ticket. You will need to fill out the “Lost Ticket Refund Application Form” and mail it to the address noted on the form. The form can be found on the Amtrak web site. You must provide the ticket number of the lost ticker. Amtrak charges substantial service and refund fees for lost tickets. Applications are held for five months to make sure the lost tickets are not used, before the refund process begins and not all tickets are refund eligible. If your lost tickets are refund eligible, you will receive a check or have the opportunity for a ticket credit.

If you are traveling by train in Europe, you will have the option to purchase Rail Europe’s Pass Protection. If you lose your rail pass, you will be reimbursed for the unused value of the pass. If you do not have a pass protection plan and lose your pass, you are so out of luck. You will have to repurchase your pass or tickets to continue on your travels.

Enough cannot be said for purchasing your train tickets in advance to realize significant cost savings. Even though the United Kingdom has the most expensive train tickets of anyone, it is still possible to get cheap train tickets with a little effort on your part.

Just buying tickets in advance will garner you discounted prices. In the United Kingdom, as well as most of Europe, train tickets go on sale about three months in advance. That is where the savings are, the advance purchase. Even if you do not have the flexibility of booking train passage months in advance, always, always, always ask if there are discount train tickets available. Even if you are buying on the day of travel, ask about discount tickets. Sometimes you have to ask for something outright in order to get it. Railroads usually have a set, but a limited number of discount tickets available and not all sell out in advance. Unless the railroad is desperate for travelers, they are not going to advertise discounted rates a few days or even on the day of departure.

A web search will reveal ticket sites that offer discounted train tickets, in addition to other train travel services. They are independent retailers of train tickets, and some are found exclusively online. They sell train tickets for all train companies and have access to millions of journey and fare combinations. Some even offer businesses that spend a tremendous amount of time and money on train travel the opportunity to set up a corporate account. That account entitles the business too volume discount prices and account management opportunities.

Your web search will also reveal online ticket agents that offer the individual train traveler a couple of tools to help find cheap tickets. One tool is “Ticket Alert.” If your trip is more than three months away, you can sign up for ticket alert and as soon as tickets for your journey are available, you will receive an email informing you of the opportunity to purchase advance tickets. With “Ticket Alert”, you do not always have to keep checking the web page for when tickets will be on sale. If there are lots of travelers that sign up for “Ticket Alert,” you may want to keep checking the web page for yourself. That just might give you the edge to be at the head of the line when ticket sales open. The other tool is some online train ticket agents offer is “Best Fare Finder.” Pick the date or dates you wish to travel, plug in your destination and Best Fare Finder will show you where cheap ticket prices, by week or month, are available around the dates you picked. You may find an off-peak time with a cheaper rate a day or so off your chosen date, but if your travel plans are flexible, the savings will be yours.

Another savings option is buying single fare rather than round-trip tickets whenever possible. You will find that considerably cheaper. Make sure your travel schedule accommodates one way ticketing. If you fail to arrive in time to make a connecting train, you might find you will have to purchase another ticket to continue on your trip.
